After being out of service for almost three years, the 100-year-old-plus Worley Bridge over the San Gabriel River is again open to light vehicular traffic. The bridge, on County Road 428, closed in May, 2011 “isolating” some families north of the river who had to make long trips to FM 487 or through Thorndale to access destinations south of the river. ‘Stash Your Trash’ Saturday at Fair Park
The City of Rockdale’s spring “stash your trash” day is set for 8 a.m. to 12-noon Saturday at Fair Park.
It’s open only to residents of the city, who may bring a driver’s license and water bill to verify residency. Full Story

Vehicle theft arrest leads to charge on house burglary
Police investigating several recent vehicle breakins made an arrest on those charges and say they found evidence connected with a residence burglary.
Thomas Ray Hobbs, 44, was arrested Thursday on two local warrants for burglary of a vehicle with two prior convictions. Full Story

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary was represented in the parade of scholarships to the stage Thursday evening in the annual Rockdale High School Awards Night. The auxiliary’s $500 scholarship was presented by Amy Caffey (L) to Samantha Muston. See page 8C. Full Story

RJH to promote 115 this Friday
Speeches by valedictorian Hailey Wilson and salutatorian Carlee Morgan will highlight promotion exercises for Rockdale Junior-High School’s Class of 2014, at 10 a.m. Friday in the junior-high gymnasium, according to Principal April Eschberger.
Wilson posted a 4.139 grade-point average in her three-year RJH academic career. She is the daughter of Michael and Shanna Wilson. Full Story

Kids to get helmets Friday
Rockdale Intermediate School students will get new bicycle helmets from a pair of local institutions Friday, June 6.
Little River Health Care and the Rockdale Police Department will measure and fit each child, with an individualized helmet from 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

Milam veterans seek secretary’s full-time return
CAMERON—Veterans service has been a topic of national conversation recently and it’s now become one in Milam County, but for a different reason.
A number of veterans filed into the courthouse last Wednesday (May 28) asking commissioners to restore Karen Kunkel, Veterans Service Office (VSO) secretary, to full-time, 40-hour-per week status in that position. Full Story

Three weeks ago, Rockdale’s Old City Cemetery on South Main was clogged with dozens of downed trees, branches and toppled grave markers. 56 attend Modesette reunion in Thorndale
THORNDALE—The annual Modesette family reunion was held Sunday, June 1 at the VFW hall in Thorndale with 56 attending.

Thorndale hands out 51 diplomas during commencement
Students receive $510,300 at annual scholarship night
THORNDALE—The 51-member Thorndale High School class of 2014 received diplomas during commencement ceremonies held Friday at Bulldog Stadium.
Speeches by class valedictorian Riley Schaefer and salutatorian Lorenzo Llana highlighted the event.
On May 27, graduates were awarded scholarships at the annual awards night. Students received $510,300 in scholarships and awards. Full Story

With Rockdale High School graduating seniors picking up almost three quarters of a million dollars in scholarships and awards— a recordThursday’s annual Awards Night was the “real McCoy.”
Emily McCoy, RHS student body president, made 15 trips to the podium to receive scholarships and awards valued at $35,870 with the amount of one still to be determined. Full Story
