Genealogy society

Milam County Genealogical Society met May 27 with 14 members and 5 guests present.

Guest speaker Dr. Donnie Hamilton of College Station gave a power point presentation, “Genealogy from the Perspective of an Historical Archaeologist: Beard House, Milano, Texas.”

It was about his research and reconstruction of the old rock house, detailing original architectural work that has enabled the 1890 building to remain standing. The house was built of cypress beams for the floor and ceiling joists and native rock.

Dr. Hamilton has restored the building’s exterior, added a new metal roof and restored the inside of the home to original condition, plus a few modern conveniences. He did the work himself with the exception of the roof, wiring and installation of air-conditioning.

Next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 at Citizens National Bank-Rockdale. Charles Hubert is in charge of the program. Refreshments will be provided by members whose last names begin with the letters P through Z. Ice, drinks and paper goods are provided. Visitors are welcome.—Linda Whorton, publicity
