Rockdale City Council formally proposed a 2.08-cent tax increase for the 2014-15 budget during a Monday public hearing, with Mayor John King noting a massive increase in employee health insurance premiums is driving the hike. Full Story
Marching toward school
Well, parallel to it, actually. But seeing the RHS Big Blue Band beginning marching practice on the Tiger Field parking lot, down the street from the high school (background), is a sure sign the new school term is about here. New teachers will begin two days of orientation Thursday. Four days of staff development will begin Monday. Start of classes is Aug. 25. Full Story

Milam residents eye tax increase
Milam County Judge Dave Barkemeyer has scheduled six public meetings to discuss the proposed new county budget which includes a 2.2-cent tax hike and a 2.75-percent salary increase for county employees.
Rockdale’s public session is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 19) at the One- Stop Center.

Campuses roll up three ‘distinctions’ as TEA releases key numbers
Friday was high-five and fist-bumping time again in the Rockdale ISD Central Administration Building.
Rockdale aced the new Texas Education Agency accountability tests, earning “met standards” ratings for the district as a whole and for all its campuses. Full Story
Recycling problem may bring change
It looks like Rockdale may not have been ready for a “drive up” recycling station and the city council could be asked to consider alternatives, possibly curbside.

GOP picks incumbent for ballot in November
The executive committee of the Milam County Republican Party, meeting in a Tuesday session in Cameron, selected incumbent Precinct 1 Commissioner Richard “Opey” Watkins, of Cameron, as the party’s nominee in the Nov. 4 general election.
Watkins was appointed to the position in July, following the resignation of Commissioner Chuck “Tank” Balch. Full Story
WHAT IS IT?—
Milam County historians have so far been unable to find any information on this grim sandstone-bas relief sculpture, found four years ago near Rockdale and publicized for the first time last week. It depicts a triple hanging. There aren’t known records of any triple hangings in Milam County history. Full Story
