Water expertise sought in new administrator

Rockdale City Council members made it clear on Monday they want the town’s new city manager to have plenty of expertise in those areas.
The council, which also held two public hearings on the new budget and tax rate, discussed qualities they want in a new city manager to replace Kelvin Knauf, who resigned in June. Full Story

Small trial date moved to Sept. 15
Pushed back from Sept. 2nd
CAMERON— The capital murder trial of a Rockdale woman accused of causing the death of a twoyear old girl in her foster care, has been moved back two weeks.
Prosecutor Bill Torrey told The Reporter the trial of Sherrill Small, originally scheduled for Sept. 2 in 20th District Court, is now set to begin on Sept. 15. Full Story
Food bank visits KC Hall on Thursday
Capital Area Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will hold its monthly a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the KC Hall.
Food is free and there are no eligibility requirements.
The monthly visits draw in excess of 200 persons each visit. Full Story
Elementary open house Thursday
Rockdale Elementary will get a four-day jump on the beginning of classes by holding its annual open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to principal Sandee Calame.
“Parents and students are invited to come meet the teacher and bring their school supplies,” Calame said. “We hope to see you there.” Full Story
Enrollment up as school starts
Expected gains to reverse five-year trend in Rockdale
School bells will ring Monday throughout Texas and the Rockdale ISD is expecting something it hasn’t seen in five years.
“We’re not sure exactly of the figures, and there are a lot of variables,” Supt. Denise Mozingo said. “But we do know it’s going to be up. Quite a few enroll during the first week.” Full Story
There’s a reason firefighters get called that. Two members of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, totally surrounded by smoke, get the best of a hayfield fire at the FM 908-CR 432 intersection at 3:38 p.m. Thursday in triple-digit temperatures. Thorndale VFD also responded. Full Story
More public meetings on budget
Milam County Judge Dave Barkemeyer conducted the first in a series of public meetings on the county budget early this week and four more are on tap.
Barkemeyer met with county residents Tuesday in the One-Stop Center in Rockdale and Monday in the Milam County Courthouse.
