Next Chamber XChange ahead June 9 at depot

The next Chamber of Commerce “Chamber XChange” mixer will be hosted by the City of Rockdale at the Missouri-Pacific dining car at the I&GN Depot on Thursday, June 9.

Hours are 5 to 7 p.m. and the event is titled: “Get On Board with the City Manager.”

Relay for Life to host washer tourney June 6th

Relay for Life of Milam County will host a washers tourney Saturday, June 6, according to Kim Jeter, spokesperson.

Site is The Barn Two Bar & Grill, FM 908 at US 77, across from Coffield Airport.

Jeter said the tourney gets underway at 2 p.m.

Entry fee is $20 per team for the double-elimination event. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place teams, according to Jeter.

“Sausage wraps and brisket sandwiches sold and all proceeds benefit Relay For Life,” Jeter said. For more information contact Jeter at 512-760-7194.

Kristi’s Krusaders pre ride event set June 13th

Kristi’s Krusaders will hold a pre-ride fundraiser at Nat’s June 13.

Fried fish plates will be sold starting at 12-noon to bikers and the public, organizer Charles Starr said.

First bike out is 1 p.m. and last bike in is at 5 p.m. “There is no ride fee but they will be taking donations to help with the cost to put on their big ride, Kristi’s Krusaders Ride for the Walk on Sept. 5, also at Nat’s.

Stops and sponsors will be announced the day of the ride, he said.

“When we get back we will have a prize drawing, then go into a live auction that promises something for everyone,” he said.

After the auction Nat’s will hold karaoke night from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. For more information call Walter Ditto 512-760-0143.

Thorndale trustees name interim candidates

THORNDALE—Trustees in the Thorndale ISD have identified three candidates as they prepare to hire an interim superintendent to replace Dr. Craig Spinn.

In a Wednesday (May 27) special session, beginning at 5 p.m., according to David Hall, board president, trustees will interview Patty Golden, Marcia Lawton Williams and Glenn Coles. All interviews will be in executive session.

Following the interviews the agenda lists an open session for possible action regarding the position.

Hiring an interim superintendent is the only agenda item for a 6:30 p.m. special session on Thursday.

Alcoa retirees schedule session for June 11th

Next meeting of Rockdale Alcoa retirees is set for Thursday, June 11, at the Alcoa Lake Training Center, according to Doug Williams, spokesperson.

Set-up is at 4 p.m., followed by doors opening at 5 and the meal at 6.

“Dessert group will be last names A-M and there will be a silent auction,” he said.

Young Eagles to offer free flights at airport

Weather permitting, a Young Eagles Rally is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at Coffield Airport.

We will be giving free airplane rides to kids ages 8 to 17,” spokesman Jimmy Cox said.

“Saturday, June 6, will be our rain date, if there’s bad weather on Saturday,” he said.

“We will also be giving demonstrations and teaching the skills used to build the RV-6 airplane we are working on,” Cox said.

Rural mail carrier hurt Saturday in accident

A rural mail carrier was taken to a Round Rock hospital after a two-vehicle head-on collision Saturday on a rural west Milam County road.

Trooper Tania Pagan of Falls County said Diana Hines, 63, of Taylor, was injured in a crash with a vehicle driven by Brian Gerhand, 26, of Thorndale.

Site was County Road 440, she said.

Vehicle damages were termed extensive.

Kay Theatre lists films for upcoming week

Here are the movies to be screened during the next week at the Kay Theatre:

• Saturday, 2 p.m, “Ice Age,” prehistoric times in classic animation. And will that squirrel ever get the acorn?

• Tuesday, 7 p.m. “The Horse Soldiers,” A union cavalry unit is sent behind Confederate lines in some key Civil War intrigue. And what a cast, John Wayne and William Holden. And it’s directed by the one and only John Ford.

Note: Beginning June 6, the Kay’s Saturday kids matinees will begin at 10 a.m.
