June 4-6 park events go national

Events surrounding the re-dedication of Milam county’s Centennial Park June 4-6 has gone national.

June 6, the day National DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) President Lynn Forney Young will speak at the site of “Old Nashville,” is National Trails Day.

The events, including several in Rockdale, have been added to the website of the Partnership for National Trails System.

Events in Milam County will begin on Thursday evening, June 4, at the Lucy June 4, at the Lucy Hill Patterson Library. Light refreshments will be served by the library board beginning at 6 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., Sandy Duncan from Austin will discuss Native Americans and their role in the development of colonial America.

Friday, June 5, will include several historians speaking on colonial Texas.

Speaking at the Kay Theatre from 10 to 12 a.m. will be Steven Gonzales, executive director the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association.

Jesse Villareal of Austin will speak at the International and Great Northern Railroad Depot from 1 to 3 p.m.

There’s no charge for the events June 4 and 5.

PARK—Saturday, June 6, activities will begin with the 10 a.m. re-dedication of DAR Centennial Park on US 79 at the Brazos River just inside.

The park, originally dedicated in 1936, and later rededicated, was established by the Sarah McCalla Chapter of the DAR in Cameron. It was almost totally destroyed by vandals five years ago.

Organizers said parking probably won’t be available at the site, which is only a few feet from busy US 79.

Bus transportation is available from Rockdale. Call the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce for details.

Also that day is a luncheon at Apache Pass Restaurant.

Fees are involved for the June 6 events.

The three-day event is sponsored by Friends of the Lucy Hill Patterson Library in Rockdale, the Lucy Hill Patterson Library Board, the Milam County Historical Commission, the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association, and Three Missions Chapter of DAR.

Members of the planning committee include Ann King, Annette Stone, Lue Wenzel, Joy Graham, Melanie Todd, Geri Burnett, Joan Ratliff, Johnnielyn Brown, John Pruett and Lucile Estell.
