Lady Tigers standout Velma Mitchell has chosen to play at Louisiana Monroe, a member of the 11-school Sun Belt Conference which includes Texas State and Texas-Arlington.

Located in Monroe, Louisiana, which famously houses the Robertson family of “Duck Dynasty” fame, ULM has an enrollment of almost 9,000 students.

The Warhawks were 12-17 last season and 8-12 in the Sun Belt.

ULM has just seven players on its current roster, five of them guards, with two Texans.

Mitchell leaves Rockdale as the second leading scorer in school history with 1,718 points.

The 5-foot-9 Mitchell, along with teammate Dae Dae Robertson, led the Lady Tigers to their first state tournament in 43 years and also established a new school record with 30 wins.

Rockdale also captured its first district crown since 2000.

Mitchell averaged 18.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.1 steals and 4.5 assists for the season.

She was named first team All-State alongside Robertson. Mitchell was also a four-year letterman and four-year first-team all-district selection.

Mitchell is the first Rockdale player to sign with a Division I school since Jessica Gaines with Stephen F. Austin in 2005.
