RVFD annual giveaway scheduled Saturday

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s annual prize giveaway night is scheduled for Saturday, at the KC Hall.

Mike Korenek, RVFD spokesman, said doors will open at 5 p.m. that day and the meal will be served at 6.

Longhorn show back at Fair Park this weekend

Fair Park will again be the site for the annual South Texas Longhorn Association Rockdale Show, a traditional spring event.

It’s a three-day event, Friday through Sunday, April 15-17, and draws entries from a large portion of Texas.

There are youth shows all three days and an open-haltered show on Saturday.

The open-haltered show will include trophy steers.

The youth show will include a variety of showmanship age classifications.

There is no admission charge for the public to watch competition in the Rockdale show.

Citywide cleanup set April 29-30, Thorndale

THORNDALE—The annual citywide cleanup in Thorndale is set for April 29-30, according to a spokesperson for the city.

Guidelines are:

• Items must be curbside by 7 a.m. Friday, April 29.

• Items which will not be picked up include construction debris, dead animals, insecticides/pesticides, paint cans (unless empty with lids removed), lead batteries, tires, used motor oil, oil filters and refrigerators without a download tag from a service company.

• City crews will pick up limbs and brush.

• Brush must be separated from other debris.

• If brush is not separate from other items to be collected, items placed at curbside won’t be collected.

Saturday bake sale set to benefit Sergio Mora

A bake sale to benefit Sergio Morales Mora is set for Saturday at Brookshire Bros.

Mora has a bacterial infection which has affected some joints and bones and will be hospitalized several weeks to get the medication he needs.

Crime Victims Week proclaimed in Milam

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioner’s Court on Monday proclaimed the week of April 10-16 AS National Crime Victim Rights Week.

The week calls attention to the life-changing impact crime has on victims and their loved ones, highlights services available to assist crime victims and reinforce the message that victims’ voices need to be heard throughout the criminal justice system.

Theme is “Serving Victims. Building Trust. Restoring Hope”.

Locally, joining forces with Crime Victims Coordinator Trish Vargas is the newly-formed Milam County Domestic Violence Outreach Team.

Anyone wanting to become a member of the outreach team or who would like to make a donation may contact Assistant District Attorney John Redington at 254-697-7013.

Chamber XChange set Tuesday at gun shop

The next Chamber of Commerce Chamber XChange mixer is set for Tuesday (April 19) at Lone Star Guns & Goods, 204 N. Main.

Hours are 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Chamber mixers are informal gatherings for Chamber members and guests.

“Bring your business card for the door prize and giveaway,” Denise Brock, spokesperson said.

Improved Internet part of deal okayed Monday

A proposal by a rural Internet company to place equipment on Rockdale water towers, approved Monday by the City Council could lead to improved Internet service.

Robert Zoch III said as part of the deal free Internet service will be provided for 13 locations in Rockdale including parks and other city facilities.

Zoch said in the future fiber Internet service could be introduced. He said the “redundancy” (backup) should help prevent outages such as a recent 12-hour Internet blackout in Rockdale.
