Reporter/Mike Brown Oh the stress of the all-serious, highly-tense Thorndale VFD BBQ Cookoff. Jason Fisher relaxes in the city park barbecue alley. Notice the green grass from recent rains. Temperatures Saturday didn’t top 90. Reporter/Mike Brown Patin Construction’s No. 1 team won best overall honors among 56 teams in the 26th annual Thorndale VFD barbecue cookoff Saturday.

It was an unexpectedly pleasant day for the cookoff, which sometimes alternates between triple digit temperatures and blackland mud.

But the 2016 edition featured temperatures in the 80s—the only day in a string of 25 in which the mercury didn’t get to 90, welcome clouds and a cooling south wind.

FIREWORKS—The cookoff weekend also featured dances Friday and Saturday, topped off with spectacular fireworks displays.

Fireworks sponsors were Win Supply of San Antonio, Jon Hildebrand Ford of Rockdale, Patin Construction, Aaction Overhead Door.

Also, the Trey Gilchrist Family, Jack Hilliard Distributing, Beason Farms and Kaylee Beason, M&G Designs.

Also, Double B Mowing, Matt Vitek, Freddie Pounders-B&F Framing, Apache Pass, Alice Schneider and Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home-Stephen Jones.
