Sales tax up in city, down in county
State Comptroller Glenn Hegar disbursed February sales tax checks last week. February checks represent sales taxes collected in December and reported to the state in January.
That continues to be not great news for Milam County, which is in a serious financial situation as a result of the legal battle over Luminant values.
Milam’s $175,471 collected this year represents a 14.84 decrease over 2016 collections of $206,059 over the same period.
For the month, the county total was $101,945, down 13.72 percent over the February, 2016 total, $118,165.
The City of Rockdale’s February total was $84,502. That’s up 1.06-percent from the February, 2016 check, $83,607.
For the year, Rockdale is up 2.31 percent, from $139,905 to $143,141.
The Rockdale Municipal
Development District (MDD) was down and up.
The MDD total for February was $39,388. That’s down,0.19 percent from $39,466 in February, 2016.
For the year, the MDD is up 2.79 percent, from $67,227 to $69,104.
The City of Cameron received a check for $81,550, down 20.41 percent from the $102,467 reported for February, 2016.
For the year, Cameron is down 6.24 percent, from $157,587 to $147,740.
Milano’s February check of $6,681 was down 21.62 percent from the February, 2016, total of $8,525.
For the year, Milano is down 6.76 percent, from $14,319 to $13,350.
Thorndale’s February check was $14,033. That’s up 5.68 percent from $13,278 in February, 2016.
Buckholts registered a 17.43-percent increase for the month. Its February, 2017, check was $1,738, up from the February, 2016, figure of $1,480.
For the year, Buckholts is up 16.71 percent, from $2,440 to $2,848.
Lexington’s February total was $20,554. That’s up 0.42 percent from the $20,467 check received in February, 2016.
Caldwell’s February check was $113,216, down 17.65 percent from $137,485 last February.
For the year, Caldwell is down 13.86 percent, from $226,447 to $195,043.
All of the adjacent counties to Milam that collect a sales tax are up for the year, but Bell and Burleson were down for the month compared to last year.
