Judge: ‘County loses 10 percent of its tax base’
The potentially devastating litigation that’s been hanging over the heads of Milam County taxpayers for almost two years has ended.
Luminant and the Milam Appraisal District (AD) announced Monday afternoon they had reached an out-of-court settlement on Luminant’s lawsuit over taxable values at Sandow Power Plant Units 4 and 5 at Rockdale. Full Story

Members of the Milam County Historical Commission are preserving items from the ruin of what may be Rockdale’s oldest house before it’s razed.

‘Tampering’ charge filed in connection with capital murder
Police say arrest probably final one
A 31-year-old Caldwell man has become the fifth, and probably the last, person charged in connection with the Jan. 19 slaying of a Rockdale woman.
But Kevin Cormier is not charged with capital murder, as were four other persons earlier this month. Full Story
TISD calls bond vote
THORNDALE—Residents of the Thorndale ISD will have more than a school board election to decide when they go to the polls on May 6.
Trustees, meeting in special session Monday, voted to bring a $12.5 million bond package before voters.

DANCE WITH ME, DADDY—And that’s what happened Friday at the Rockdale Tiger Booster Club’s 10th annual Father-Daughter Dance, held in the KC Hall. The dance, which raised money for scholarships, drew 418 persons, including 175 dad-daughter couples. Full Story
First city traffic death in five years
Rockdale recorded its first inside-the-city-limits traffic death in almost five years Friday morning when a 73-year-old Hemphill woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a one-vehicle crash the previous night. Full Story
County OKs burn ban for rural Milam
Milam County commissioners on Monday imposed a rural outdoor burning ban, effective immediately.
The action was urged by Henry Horelica of the Milam County Fire Chief’s Asslociation who noted dry grass conditions which are expected to persist long beyond forecast rains this week.
Outside burning is always prohibited in Milam municipalities. Full Story
Police, RVFD set banquet for Saturday
Rockdale’s annual Policemen/Firemen of the Year Banquet is scheduled for Saturday at the KC Hall.
Doors open at 5 p.m. with a meal served at 6:30 and a brief ceremony and dance to follow.
The annual officer-of-the-year and firefighter-of-the-year honors will be announced.
Last year’s winners were police Sgt. Jody Tillery and firefighter John Villarreal. Full Story
