Tiger netters focus on team
For the first time in years, the Tiger netters will participate in team tennis.
It’s a fortuitous move for the Tigers, because the team is returning a bevy of experience including several seniors.
“We were going to play last year, but since Dusty Loewe was later hired to be the basketball coach, he wasn’t able to make it happen in time,” said new Tiger tennis coach, Rebecca King who took over for the departed Loewe who left for Groesbeck. “I looked into it back in the fall and got all of the details, so I joined TTCA (Texas Tennis Coaches Association) and attended their conference in December.”
Groesbeck is now in Rockdale’s region coming down from 4A this year so the Tigers will see Loewe’s team at the team tennis meet.
TTCA runs the team tennis meets for 3A-2A-A and you have to be a member in order to participate.
“A lot of times, there just aren’t enough kids but right now we have a fairly large senior class,” said King, who doubles as mother of Blake King.
That expanded class includes mixed doubles duo Erin Blanchard and Blake King who brought home a silver medal from state last year.
Also, Ben Blanchard, district champion and third place finisher at regionals in boys singles, Reyan Henderson, Trace Phillips, Adrian Salcedo and Michael Zapata.
Sophomore and girls singles district champion and 3rd place finisher at regionals, Reyna Gonzalez is also back, along with newcomer freshman Devon Whitsel, a ranked junior player.
The team has a challenging schedule ahead of them this spring, which coach King hopes will prepare them for district and post-district play.
Along with Georgetown, the team will travel to Liberty Hill, Round Rock Westwood and even a trip west to the 49th Annual Mason Invitational hosted by Mason High School, a 2A perennial powerhouse in tennis.
The Regional Team Tennis meet will be held in Franklin on March 3-4.
