Rain dampens state tourney
The Tigers came out strong against a tough Shallowater team Saturday morning, taking six of the seven doubles matches.
As soon as the last doubles match left the court, the rain came and they were not able to finish.
Rockdale, Shallowater, Ingram-Moore, and Groesbeck coaches decided to call off the rest of the tournament around 2 p.m. on Saturday, giving these four teams a tie for fifth place out of 16 teams.
The top four teams (Brock, Mason, Reagan County, Wall) made arrangements to play at other locations.
“I am very proud of this team, they never quit during any of these matches,” said Rockdale Coach Rebecca King. “We decided to compete in team tennis this year to give our players the chance to play more competitive matches.”
Rockdale had earned the trip to state by finishing second to Grosbeck at the regional tournament.
“The experience they gained at team tennis regionals and state should strengthen their play during district and beyond in individual tennis.”
Rockdale disposed of Thrall 14-5 in the first round on the strength of sweeping boys doubles.
The Tigers were handled by Mason 16-3 in the second round.
Rockdale was up 6-1 on Shallowater before rain ended the tournament.
