Milam sales tax down in 1st quarter

The first quarter of 2017 sales tax collections wasn’t a good one for Milam County and most of its municipalities.

State Comptroller Glenn Hegar disbursed April sales tax checks last week. April checks represent sales taxes collected in February and reported to the state in March.

Milam was the only county among adjacent counties—two of them don’t collect sales taxes— to record a decline.

Rockdale, Cameron and Milano also reported losses while sales tax collections for Thorndale and Buckholts showed an increase.

Milam’s $318,710 collected so far this year represents a 16.58 decrease over 2016 collections of $382,084 over the same period.

For the month, the county total was $75,133, down 15.79 percent over the April, 2016 total, $89,224.

The City of Rockdale’s April total was $56,440. That’s down 6.55 percent from the April, 2016 check, $60,400.

For the year, Rockdale is down 0.68 percent, from $254,207 to $252,470.

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) was down for the month but up for the year.

The MDD total for April was $28,046. That’s down 3.77 percent from $29,147 in April, 2016.

For the year, the MDD is up 0.32 percent, from $122,870 to $123,264.

The City of Cameron received a check for $70,491, up 1.30 percent from the $69,586 reported for April, 2016.

For the year, Cameron is down 7.63 percent, from $296,784 to $274,139.

Milano’s April check of $6,982 was up 17.99 percent from the April, 2016, total of $5,917.

For the year, Milano is down 1.37 percent, from $27,135 to $26,763.

Thorndale’s April check was $8,985. That’s down 1.97 percent from $9,166 in April, 2016.

Buckholts registered an 11.53-percent increase for the month. Its April, 2017, check was $1,026, up from the April, 2016, figure of $920.

For the year, Buckholts is up 17.46 percent, from $4,415 to $5,187.

Lexington’s April total was $16,486. That’s down 3.35 percent from the $17,059 check received in April, 2016.

Caldwell’s April check was $87,264, up 4.68 percent from $83,362 last April. For the year, Caldwell is down 7.62 percent, from $394,806 to $364,709.

All of the adjacent counties to Milam that collect a sales tax are up for the year, but Bell was down for the month when compared to last year’s April total.
