Sales tax still down in city, county

Sales tax rebates for 2017 continue to lag behind for the city, county and Rockdale Municipal Development District.

State Comptroller Glenn Hegar disbursed May sales tax checks last week. May checks represent sales taxes collected in March and reported to the state in April.

Milam and Lee Counties reported declines in monthly sales tax rebates while other adjacent counties covered in the survey reported increases.

(Williamson and Robertson don’t collect county sales taxes).

Rockdale, Cameron and Caldwell also reported losses while sales tax collections for Thorndale, Milano and Buckholts showed an increase.

Milam’s $417,554 collected so far this year represents a 16.25 decrease over 2016 collections of $498,591 over the same period.

For the month, the county total was $98,844, down 15.16 percent over the May, 2016 total, $116,507.

The City of Rockdale’s May total was $81,567. That’s down 1.54 percent from the May, 2016 check, $82,850.

For the year, Rockdale is down 0.89 percent, from $336,057 to $334,038.

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) was slightly down for the month and slightly up for the year.

The MDD total for May was $38,345. That’s down 0.82 percent from $38,664 in May, 2016.

For the year, the MDD is up 0.04 percent, from $161,535 to $161,609.

The City of Cameron received a check for $86,587, down 9.49 percent from the $95,673reported for May, 2016.

For the year, Cameron is down 8.08 percent, from $392,458 to $360,726.

Milano’s May check of $7,908 was up 11.27 percent from the May, 2016, total of $7,107.

For the year, Milano is up 1.25 percent, from $34,243 to $34,672.

Thorndale’s May check was $17,592. That’s up 11.79 percent from $15,736 in May, 2016.

Buckholts registered a 26.68-percent increase for the month. Its May, 2017, check was $1,836, up from the May, 2016, figure of $1,449.

For the year, Buckholts is up 19.74 percent, from $5,865 to $7,023.

Lexington’s May total was $18,826. That’s down 4.10 percent from the $19,632 check received in May, 2016.

Caldwell’s May check was $135,637, up 9.52 percent from $123,844 last May. For the year, Caldwell is down 3.52 percent, from $518,651 to $500,346.

All of the adjacent counties to Milam that collect a sales tax are up for the year, but Lee was down for the month when compared
