Best ever

Thanks to Chamber for fantastic Fourth of July at Fair Park

Many people who attended the Fourth of July activities at Fair Park last Tuesday came away saying it was best one they can remember in Rockdale in many years.

The fireworks were certainly as spectacular as any this town has seen. At times, as illustrated in last week’s Reporter, the entire sky lit up.

John Adams would have been proud. The Founding Father, and second president, who was there at the birth in July, 1776, said this about how Independence Day should be celebrated:

“It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

We’re trying, Johnny.

It’s estimated over 1,000 people were at the park. Now that’s a guess and for good reason. Many people simply sat outside the park where the view was equally spectacular. Hundreds more observed from Central Rockdale parking lots, fields and their own homes.

It’s a big deal and Rockdale loves its Fourth of July.

Huge successes like this don’t happen by themselves, of course. The Rockdale and Cameron Chambers of Commerce alternate the annual celebrations. Our Chamber had a full evening of activities for children at the park and it was spectacularly attended.

Thanks also to the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Communities in Concert Band for their roles.

Chamber directors and volunteers spent a lot of hours making those activities possible, as they do at many events throughout the year.

There’s been a lot of discussion in recent years about how Rockdale funds events and who gets funding for what events. A lot of attention is paid to formulas, guidelines, boards, commissions, committees and procedure.

Fine. But surely there’s still a place, and a rationale, for “taking care of the home folks,” which is exactly what the Chamber and its scores of volunteers did last Tuesday.

The Chamber does that so many times throughout the year. Your town appreciates you.

And so does John Adams.—M.B.
