Hot wheels

Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown Rockdale’s volunteer firefighters had another one of those unique calls Thursday afternoon when they responded to a fully-engulfed garbage packer on FM 1712, just north of the FM 487 intersection. Firefighters got the call at 1:15 p.m. The blaze required over an hour to bring under control and the farm-market road was blocked at both ends while the RVFD battled the blaze. No injuries were reported. The truck driver told onlookers at the scene he heard a popping sound and discovered the truck had burst into flames. The blaze also set off a grass fire which went into a neighboring field to the west and which was also extinguished by Rockdale volunteers. (See photo, page 3A.) In addition to the Rockdale VFD, the Milam County Sheriff’s Department and a constable also responded to the scene.
