The Old gives way to the new

The Milam County Historical Society has salvage virtually everything of value from the historic, 140-year-old Dr. Rob Wallis house at San Gabriel and Milam. Now even the bricks are being preserved. Bricks have been sold to a third party and are being carted off. The house is on the site of Rockdale’s new police station. Demolition and clearing is going on all around the 140-year-old Dr. Rob Wallis house, which will be razed as part of the construction project to build Rockdale’s new police station in the 300 block of East Cameron (US 79).

(The house was partially destroyed in a Jan. 19, 2016 fire).

An adjacent house was razed earlier this month and site clearing work has now progressed to the doorsteps of the home, which has a claim to being the oldest house in Rockdale.

Even at the 11th hour the Milam County Historical Society continues to preserve every item possible from the structure. Recently the society has sold brick from the home to a private contractor.

The home was full of antiques when it burned. Many were lost in the fire.

The house was definitely built no later than the 1880s, possibly even before Rockdale was incorporated as a city in 1874.

Adjacent house on Milam Avenue has been demolished. A number of canceled checks dating back to the 1970s were found in the rubble. Adjacent house on Milam Avenue has been demolished. A number of canceled checks dating back to the 1970s were found in the rubble.

Left, even in ruins the Dr. Ron Wallis house, with its columns and entry archway retains some Victorian grandeur. Above, steps lead to nowhere and demolition and clearing crew works in background.
