The RISD School Board, meeting in special session last Wednesday in the Central Office Board Room, unanimously named Julia Cardona to the vacant Place 7 position.

She replaces the late Kent Bowermon who died June 11.

NEW TRUSTEE—Cardona took the oath of office during the session.

She is a 1993 graduate of Rockdale High School and received an associate degree from Temple College in business management.

Cardona is workforce specialist business services for Workforce Solutions of Texas Rockdale.

Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo noted that Cardona and husband, Cutberto, have six children, two RHS graduates and four currently attending RISD schools, one in each of the district’s four campuses.

“She is currently serving on the district’s CTE Advisory Committee and is excited to broaden her knowledge through the work of the school board,” Dr. Monzingo said.

VACANCY—Dr. Monzingo said the Texas Education Code stipulates remaining members of a school board may fill a vacancy by appointment until the next election.

It’s the second vacancy filled this year. In June, board members appointed Charles Miles to the position vacated by the resignation of Lee Jenkins the previous month.

TIME CHANGE—The RISD has also changed the time of its monthly meetings to 5:30 p.m. from 6 p.m.

That will be in effect beginning with the regular monthly meeting set for Monday (Sept. 18) in the RISD Central Office.
