Sandow 4 and 5 shutting down; end of an era

It really was Friday the 13th for the Rockdale area.

Luminant announced this morning it was closing its Sandow 4 and 5 power plants.

That ends an era which began in the early 1950s when Alcoa constructed a power plant to provide electricity for its aluminum smelter. The smelter closed in 2008-9.

Also closing will be the 3 Oaks Mine in Lee and Bastrop Counties which supplies coal for the Luminant facility.

Luminant is the largest taxpayer in Milam County and in the Rockdale ISD.

Luminant is a subsidiaty of Vistra Energy, which announced the closing early Friday. It is estimated about 450 persons will be affected by the shutdown.

Luminant expects to cease operation Jan. 11, 2018.
