Veterans due honor Thursday

RHS gym site for ceremony

Wilson Wilson Local veterans will be honored in advance of the Saturday’s Veterans Day holiday with several observances including the annual multi-school ceremony Thursday in the RHS Gym.

State Rep. Terry Wilson will be the featured speaker.

There’s also the annual Thursday luncheon for veterans and spouses at the junior-high.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525 will host a free breakfast at the post home the next morning, 7 to 10 a.m. Friday.

CEREMONY—Hundreds of students from the elementary and intermediate campuses will be bused to the RHS Gym Thursday to participate in the giant program.

Students from each elementary and intermediate grade will sing patriotic songs.

Wilson (R-Georgetown), is a decorated combat veteran who retired after a 30-year career in the U.S. Army.

He is well versed in major weapons systems development, as well as command and control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems.

ANTHEMS—The combined RHS Big Blue and RJH Big Gold Bands, under the direction of Adrian Acevedo and Marco Estrada, will play a medley of service anthems and veterans will stand when their anthem is played.

RHS teacher Art Free, a retired Army veteran, will speak about America’s wars.

There will be a presentation from VFW Post 6525, winning Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy presentations, a flag-folding ceremony and “Taps.”

The ceremony is open to the public.

LUNCHEON—Prior to the Thursday ceremony, veterans and the spouses are invited to the annual luncheon in the junior-high commons.

Serving begins at 12-noon and the luncheon will end in time for veterans to attend the 1:30 p.m. ceremony at the high school.

BREAKFAST—The breakfast is Friday morning— not Thursday—from 7 to 10 a.m. at VFW Post 6525, 978 West US 79 near the western city limits.

“The breakfast is free to the public and everyone is invited to attend and honor our veterans,” Larry Rubino, post commander, said.
