Utility vehicle accident claims life on Monday

A 54-year-old Rockdale area man died Monday afternoon as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident south of town.

Funeral services for Lonnie Crump were pending at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home at presstime. See page 4D.

Emergency vehicles, including the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department, were called to the scene, FM 908 near Burleson County Road 302, at 5:19 p.m.

According to the Burleson County DPS, Crump was riding a 2012 Polaris Ranger on FM 908 when he attempted a hard right turn and was ejected.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The DPS said he was not wearing a helmet or seat belt.

Free food giveaway ahead for Thursday

The Capital Area Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will hold its monthly free food distribution in Rockdale at 9 a.m. Thursday in the KC Hall parking lot, according to Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson.

“Volunteer helpers will be needed and greatly appreciated,” she said. “These distributions depend totally upon our volunteer helpers.”

Call 446-6475 for further information. “Clients are asked to bring sacks or boxes for groceries,” she said.

Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Next Chamber mixer scheduled for Friday

The next Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Mixer is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at 113 North Main, next to The Community Room.

Hosts will be Shannon Kornegay and Dani Monie.

Mixers are designed to enable the Rockdale business community, and any interested persons, to meet on a regular basis.

They are held through the Chamber of Commerce.

More vehicle-deer accidents reported

The plague of vehicle deer accidents in the Rockdale area continued during the past week with troopers called to three more as follows:

• 7:49 p.m. Nov. 7, US 77 near Northwood, driver Geraldine Fierman of Kyle, moderate damage.

• 4:59 p.m. Nov. 8, FM 908 southwest of CR 432, driver Jennifer Auvil of Austin, minor to moderate damage.

• 4:51 p.m. Thursday, FM 908 southeast of County Road 302, driver Traci White, 23, of Rockdale, moderate damage.

POSGCD okays budget after two hearings

The 2018 budget and fees for Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) was approved last week.

Two public hearings were held before the regular board meeting—adoption of the 2018 budget and adoption of 2018 fee rates and schedules.

A request was made for more detailed descriptions of budget items and expenses during the budget hearing. Two landowners requested the transport fees be increased.

Fred Russell, a Gause landowner, presented a handout and petition to the board.

Thorndale planning Christmas ‘light-up’

THORNDALE—The Thorndale Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Christmas Lot light-up at 6 p.m. Sunday with the public invited.

Featured will be music, singing, food and a visit from Santa.

Thorndale Cares sets deadlines for 2017

Application forms for Thorndale Cares may now be picked up from Thorndale City Hall and Betty Cuba at Thorndale Elementary, according to organizer Melvin Hirt.

Application deadline is Dec. 15 and new applications must be submitted every year.

Hirt said monetary donations can be made at Thorndale Prosperity Bank with receipts available upon request.

He said donations of food and toys may be dropped off at Thorndale City Hall.
