5 from nursing home tests; Rockdale clinic is Monday
Body

The COVID-19 spike reached new heights during the past week, with a record eight new cases reported Tuesday—an astounding 22 for the week—and the overall count soaring to 73.

For the first time, the count reflected testing from Milam County’s three nursing homes, with all five cases announced on Monday a result of nursing home tests.

As of Reporter presstime Wednesday morning, according to Young, the Milam County Health Department said there were 23 active cases, two persons remained hospitalized and 70 persons, believed to have come into contact with someone who tested positive, were being monitored.

There has been one Milam death attributed to the virus since the case count started,

Young said there were seven positive tests from Milam nursing homes, five of whom lived in Milam County and two out-of-county. The positive tests included both residents and staff members and included positive tests in both Rockdale and Cameron facilities.

He said the two out-of-county positive tests were nursing home employees. They are not reflected in Milam statistics.

On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the soaring Texas virus count “unacceptable” and hinted additional restrictions would be imposed, although he stopped short of saying shelter-in-place would be reimposed.

Young has termed the Milam surge “alarming.”

TESTING—The first free COVID-19 testing clinic comes to Rockdale on Monday with the drive-through event being held at the former Rockdale hospital, 1700 Brazos.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but those wanting to be tested need to call in advance to set up an appointment.

Call 512-883-2400 to set up an appointment, or visit txcovidtest.org.

There are also testing clinics Tuesday at the Milano VFD Fire Station and Wednesday, July 1, at the Cameron Fire Station.

Who should be tested?

Possible symptoms include fever/chills, coughs, fatigue, body aches/muscle joint pain, shortness of breath, sore throat, headaches, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, nasal congestion and loss of taste/smell.

SURGE CONTINUES— How dramatic the surge in COVID-19 positive tests is emphasized by the box with this story.

Since June 3, just three weeks ago, positive tests have more than doubled, increasing by 152 percent.

Young announced five new cases on Thursday, a record that stood only until eight cases were reported on Tuesday.

There have been 35 new cases in the past two weeks. That’s almost as much as the rest of the “virus count” combined. The total from the beginning to June 10 was 38.
