CAMERON—A former employee of the Milam County Tax Office was indicted for the second time this year by a Milam County Grand Jury Thursday.
Lydia Cervantez, 56, was indicted for aggravated perjury.
In February, Cervantez was indicted for false name/ information, forgery of vehicle registration.
UNEMPLOYMENT—
Prosecutor Bill Torrey told The Reporter the new indictment involved statements allegedly made by Cervantez as she attempted to obtain unemployment benefits.
The prosecutor maintained Cervantez admitted to wrongdoing in the initial investigation then, under oath, in a telephone hearing to obtain unemployment benefits, denied the previous admission.
“She was awarded unemployment benefits, we appealed and the ruling was reversed,” Torrey said. “She is not getting unemployment benefits.”
TITLES—The original indictments involved charges that Cervantez and her daughter, 26-year-old Laura Cervantez, also then an employee of the tax office, altered documents to avoid paying fees or taxes.
Arrest affidavits alleged documents involving the same Ford F-150 pickup were altered on July 7 and Oct. 27, 2017.
Investigation into the matter by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles began on Nov. 2 and the two were arrested in January.
Both women’s employment was terminated in January before the arrest.
Torrey said all the cases remain pending in 20th District Court.
