Milam County 4-H members competed at the County Food Show and Food Challenge 2019, at Bea’s Kitchen in Cameron.
Fourteen 4-H members competed, and all will advance to district on Dec. 11 in Belton.
This is the traditional 4-H Food Show where 4-H members make a dish at home and present it to the judges.
The 4-H member must know the nutrition of their dish as well as the MyPlate food groups, nutrients, and other important information about their 4-H food and nutrition project.
We had seven compete in this part of the food contest as follows:
Juniors—Kaylor Eschberger, bread and cereal; Luke Holcombe, main dish; Hadley Wagner, nutritious snacks.
Intermediate—Harleigh Barrett, nutritious snacks; Klaybourne Eschberger, main dish.
Senior—Wylie Barrett, fruits and vegetables; Gabriel Ramthun, nutritious snacks.
Three teams competed in the Food Challenge Competition.
The Food Challenge competition is a lot like the “Iron Chef” on the Food Network.
The 4-H members bring a tote of equipment to a table. The table includes the food items and no directions or measurements.
Presentations are given by the team on the preparation of the dish, food safety, nutrition and the cost per serving or substitutions and meal planning.
At the county food challenge contest the “key” ingredient was canned pumpkin.
The three teams who advanced and competed were:
Junior—The 4-G’s, Garner Chapman, Evie Hill, Maddie Lasher, and Paton Timmons; Nach Yoe Average Chefs, Jessilynn Henderson, Jordyn Henderson, and Hadley Wagner.
Intermediate— Milam Master Chefs, Harleigh Barrett, Klay Eschberger, and Hannah Bakken.

Part of this week’s 4-H news column is written by Robert Miller, a member of the Gause 4-H Club.
Robert shares his experience in the organization. Here’s Robert:
My name is Robert Miller and I am a member of the Gause and Milam County 4-H clubs.
I’ve been in 4-H since I was in second grade, and throughout all these years I’ve been to many different contests and competitions.
These contests have varied from showing livestock and baking cakes, to categorizing fruits and veggies.
Doing all these contests has given me a lot of different life skills, while having fun in the process.
For example, consumer decision making taught me how to make better financial decisions when shopping, a skill I’ll carry into college.
But the best part of being an active 4-Her is that you get to travel to different places around Texas.
Through CDM, we get to go to San Antonio, stay at a gorgeous hotel, and go to the fair.
If you want to join in on the fun and gain many life skills, you can sign up today at www.join4h.com.
