Alcoa’s former Sandow Steam Electric Unit 5 and the smokestack of Unit 4 are no more after an implosion on Saturday morning at the SLR property using almost 700 pounds of explosives to bring them both down. Unit 4 is being repurposed. The white tower, the tallest one of all on the property, will be left there as a reminder of Alcoa’s past, and a museum is planned to provide a place to see Alcoa’s history.
