Not all this summer’s annual events in Milam County were called off due to COVID-19.

The annual Milam Row Crops tour was staged Thursday even though there were changes due to the potentially deadly virus.

Still, about two dozen participants toured three sites under the guidance of the Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension Service and County Agent Floyd Ingram.

There was no noon meal and the entire event was held outdoors with social distancing.

The tour began at Jay Beckhusen’s grain sorghum demonstration site off County Road 118A near Buckholts.

A program “Grain Sorghum Variety Trial and Sugar Cane Aphid Discussion” was presented by Dr. Ronnie Schell, extension service state cropping systems specialist.

At a cotton variety trial location, also on the Beckhusen Place, a program “Cotton RACE Trial and Pest Management” was presented Dr. Ron McKnight, extension service statewide cotton specialist, and Dale Mott, extension program specialist.

The tour then moved to a corn demonstration plot at the Buddy Johnson Place on FM 428, south of CR 428 (Worley Bridge Road).

Program “Corn Variety Trial and Resources” was presented by Dr. Schell.

Two continuing education units (CEUs) were awarded to participants.

Sponsors were Croprotek Insurance (which provided breakfast), D&M Grain, Buckholts State Bank, Lone Star Ag Credits, Thorndale Co-Op, Nutrena Ag Solutions, Capital, Farm Credit and United Ag and Turf.
