For years Rockdale animal lovers have dreamed of having a dog park to take Fifi and Fido for an afternoon of leg-stretching and stick retrieving.

That dream is now a reality.

The City of Rockdale’s new dog park will host a “soft opening at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12.

It’s located just outside the city’s wastewater plant on Beverly Drive, between the plant and the animal control shelter.

City Manager Chris Whittaker said while the facility will be open to the public on that date, there are plans for expansion.

“You can bring your dog to play on Feb. 12 and see our plans for future expansion of the park,” Whittaker said.

On that date a limited number of “Doggie Treat Bags” by Rockdale General Store will be available to pets in attendance.

City workers are busy working on the park which features the standard (for dog parks) double gate.

Whittaker said future plans include separate areas for small dogs and large dogs as well as much more.

If you don’t have a dog, and want one, that can be fixed, too. The dog park is adjacent to the animal shelter which has a number of pets awaiting their “forever home.”

Contact the city animal control officer through the police department for more information about dog adoptions.

Sponsors of the dog park are Whinstone, Rockdale General Store, Rockdale Pet Adoption Welfare Service (PAWS) and the Rabinowitz family.

To get to the city sewer complex, which includes the dog park and animal shelter, head south on FM 487 (Wilcox Street) and turn left on Beverly Drive. The complex is on the right.
