Astronauts

Theme for study at Rockdale Elementary School has been “Launching the New Generation” and students—including first-grader Brooklyn Prince—made their own “astronaut helmets” and learned about Rockdale’s astronaut, 1968 RHS graduate Ken Cockrell. That’s Cockrell at left in his own helmet during one of his five space shuttle missions, three as commander. He was one of the first five persons to receive the new Distinguished Alumni Award—for RHS and Aycock High graduates—last October. Cockrell recently flew to Rockdale’s airport to attend an informal luncheon of Class of ‘68 graduates.
