Rockdale Christian Services had a “banner year” in food distribution in 2019, according to Pam Warren, RCS Chair.

Warren said RCS distributed just over 50 tons of food in the year just past.

“We received over five tons of food donations, and monetary funds to purchase an additional 24 tons of food,” she said.

“ In addition, we partnered with Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) and Walmart to rescue a total of eight tons of food that was near its expiration date,” Warren said.

Warren added: “We were also blessed through our partnership with CTFB to participate in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) for Seniors (60 years or older), also known as ‘commodity boxes.’ That was the first full year of CSFP distribution for a total of 875 boxes, which is approximately 13 tons of food.”

Also, RCS co-sponsored the Fresh Foods for Families CTFB mobile pantry with the Rockdale Knights of Columbus Council No. 7014.

On average 160 families per month were provided with 30 pounds of fresh produce each.

Rockdale Christian Services provides food assistance to South Milam County residents (Milano, Rockdale, Thorndale).

“Our food resources are made available through many avenues: United Way grants, direct contributions of money and food, Heavenly Treasures sales, and partnerships with both Walmart and Central Texas Food Bank,” Warren said.

“Most importantly, thousands of volunteer hours make this all possible,” she added.

“We extend a heartfelt thank you to the community for their continued support, whether it be volunteer hours or donations of food, gently used household items, or monetary. Without you this food outreach would not be possible,” she said.
