The power went on at Bit-main’s cryptocurrency mining operation at the former Rockdale smelter Friday morning.
Bitmain is now accepting employment applications for some temporary jobs at the Central Texas Workforce Center-Rockdale.
Julia Cardona, Workforce Center Business Services Representative, said currently the jobs at Bitmain are for temporary positions with permanent jobs to follow in September.
“We are currently accepting applications for temporary general labor positions at Bitmain,” she said. “This will involve unloading, assembly and cleaning. These jobs will only be for three to four weeks and will be during August.”
Cardona said the jobs that will follow later, not yet posted, are full-time maintenance technicians.
County Judge Steve Young has noted the maintenance jobs will be to keep the more than 13,000 “antminer” machines running.
“When they aren’t running, of course, they are not ‘mining’ bitcoin (cryptocurrency) and that means they aren’t making money,” he said.
About 50 permanent jobs are forecast when all of Bit-main’s antminers are up and running.
Bitmain has leased six of the eight former aluminum potlines at the site and another crypto operation—GMO Registry/Whinston is innegotiation for the remaining two.
