The board amended COVID protocols for masks beginning June 2, making masks optional in school facilities except on buses, where they will remain mandatory per CDC recommendations during a meeting of the Rockdale Independent School District trustees Monday night.

The district will continue to monitor COVID and make adjustments as needed.

The board held a public hearing for community input for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief federal grant program.

Dr. Denise Monzingo explained the opportunities for parents, staff and community members to present their ideas for the federal grant, as well as, priorities the district has identified to fund.

Peggy Eckman, RISD bus driver, spoke in the public forum regarding single and split routes for buses. Eckman was speaking on behalf of the bus drivers in support of retaining the split routes. Pam Kaufmann presented results of a parent survey about split schedule bus routes and school start times. Results and comments were about 50/50 on the opinions of going back to the old schedule or keeping the schedule from this year.

SWEARING-IN—Jason Barcak, Place 1, and Troy Zinn, Place 2, were administered oaths of office for their new terms of the RISD Board of Trustees. Troy Zinn was reelected as the board president. Charles Miles was reelected as vice-president and Wenda Dyer was reelected as Board Secretary.

YEAR-IN-REVIEW—Jacob Campsey, athletic director, gave a year-in-review report of the Athletic Department, including participation numbers for the year, summer camps and future goals for the department.

Adrian Acevedo, band director, presented a year-in-review report covering the school bands.

GRAD LIST APPROVED—The board approved the 2021 Rockdale High School graduates for graduation scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 28.

PERSONNEL—The board was informed of the following certified personnel hires: Catherine Phipps, elementary teacher; Christopher VanCleave, intermediate inclusion teacher/coach; Victoria Sisemore, junior high science teacher; Caylie Towery, junior high science teacher; LuToria Brickhouse, high school ELAR teacher, Sharon Collins, high school ELAR teacher; and Julie Rogers, high school Life Skills teacher.

The board was told of the following non-certified personnel hires: DeJoria Robertson, junior high inclusion aide/coach; Bonney Smith, junior high library aide; Tasha San Migel, high school inclusion aide.

The board was informed of the following certified personnel resignations and retirements and non-certified personnel resignations: Kristy Kaufmann, junior high school teacher; Kelly Blair, junior high school principal; Amanda Hibbs-Rodriguez, high school teacher; Rebekah Langley, BMSS, speech language pathologist; Karen Laughlin (retirement), elementary school teacher; Lance Weidler, Director of Maintenance; Angi Lara, elementary school food service manager; Samantha Ordones, elementary food service; Maria Santellano, intermediate principal’s secretary; Valerie Cruz, intermediate library aide; Ma De Reyes Baez, high school custodian.

The board approved the dual assignment probationary contract renewal for Brandon Bahara, assistant band director, for the 2021- 2022 school year and the probationary contract renewal for Bailey Dismuke, high school teacher, for the 2021-2022 school year.
