All of Rockdale west of Childress remains on a “boil water notice” after this 12-inch water main blew out and sent brown water and rocks out of the ground about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on US 79 (West Cameron Ave.) in front of Mr. Gatti’s. The northernmost lane of the highway was closed while crews tackled the mess. The highway reopened Tuesday afternoon. Classes for the Rockdale ISD were canceled due to the water situation. The water main has been repaired but the boil water notice won’t be rescinded until samples have been analyzed. Water customers west of Childress should boil water prior to consumption, washing hands and face or other related activities. Children, senior citizens and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. To ensure complete destruction of harmful bacteria, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be boiled for at least two minutes and cooled prior to using for human consumption. The city promised to notify water customers when the boil water directive is lifted.
