The busy month of October is off and running at Rockdale’s Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library.

A large come-and-go crowd gathered on Friday for the monthly First Friday mixer, sponsored this time around by Rockdale PAWS (Pet Adoption Welfare Services).

The events are held every first Friday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and are free “get acquainted” sessions, which feature light refreshments.

Programs are scheduled for three of the month’s four Thursdays in the library.

And the annual “lock-in,” held in connection with the Genealogy Center of the Waco-McLennan County Library is set for a Friday.

CHEMICALS—It all gets underway at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, with a presentation “The Scary Truth About Chemicals in Your Home.”

Presenter Curah Beard will demonstrate mixing “do it yourself” products.

EL CAMINO REAL—Dr. Steven Gonzales will present a program on the El Camino Real de los Tejas at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

He is executive director of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association.

Milam County has numerous historical sights along the trail, including Apache Pass, a traditional crossing of the San Gabriel River.

The trail extended from Louisiana to Mexico. It’s administered by the National Park Service and is the second oldest such trail in the United States. It’s viewed as a future destination for “heritage tourism.”

LOCK-IN—The Lock-in—it’s not really a lock-in, it’s normal business hours is set for Friday, Oct 19.

There will be presentations from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

PARANORMAL—Paranormal researcher Greg Lawson, a Rockdale native, will be on hand for a book signing on Thursday, Oct. 25.

It gets underway at 6 p.m. and is Lawson’s second program at the library.
