The Milam County 4th of July Celebration will kick off on the square in downtown Cameron to celebrate Independence Day. Fireworks are currently banned in Milam County, however, the organizers are hoping for enough rain that the ban might be rescinded for a licensed provider fireworks show.
Activities for the event begin at 4 p.m. with a Kids Zone with games sponsored by local businesses. Games include a water slide, balloon toss, duck pond and more. Kids may play games all day with a $5 wristband purchase.
Citizens National Bank will be on hand with hot dogs, and Central Avenue Bistro will have lemonade in the Kid Zone. Edward D. Jones is sponsoring the water slide. Oncor and Atmos Energy will have games and Masters Martial Arts will be there with demonstrations. Milam County AgriLife will have a duck pond and other activities.
A dunking booth will be on hand with an opportunity to dunk local personalities. Music from local DJ D Lo and the Community Concert Band will provide music in the square. Food and drink selections will be provided by Hot Corners, Jazzy J’s Southern Way, Kona Ice, Triple C Winery, En Gedi Vineyards, 5D Travel Tavern and others.
A homemade ice cream contest will be held at Railfan on Main, 105 E. Main (formerly Bea’s Kitchen). The First Baptist Church Ladies must receive your entry by 5:30 p.m. There are two categories, Traditional Ice Cream Flavors and Creative Ice Cream Flavors. Prizes will be awarded for the top two in each category. The winner’s ice cream will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
A margarita contest will be at Railfan on Main, 206 S. Central (formerly MHMR). The entry deadline is 6 p.m. Entrants may contact the Cameron Chamber for details. Contact the chamber if you are interested in being a judge in either contest.
“The chamber is thankful for the donation in honor of Milam County 4-H for the fireworks,” said Melanie Reed, Director of Retail Tourism for the Cameron Chamber of Commerce. “Other sponsors include Classic Bank, Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and Witte Properties.”
“Bring your lawn chairs and towels for the kids and enjoy the fun,” she said. “It will be a great way to celebrate the 4th of July in downtown Cameron.”
Fireworks are scheduled after dusk at the Oakhill Cemetery parking lot in downtown Cameron, if allowed and ban lifted,” said Melanie Reed, Director of Retail Tourism for the Cameron Chamber of Commerce.
