Next Wednesday is the Fourth of July and it’s Cameron’s turn.
The county seat will host the annual fireworks spectacular, which will come after an evening of activities at Wilson-Ledbetter Park on FM 1600 near Cameron’s southern city limits.
As usual, many businesses, along with city, county and federal facilities, will be closed for what is this year a holiday smack in the middle of the work week.
FIREWORKS—Rockdale and Cameron alternate hosting the fireworks display, which is sponsored by Classic Bank, Citizens National Bank and Standard’s Home Health.
Rockdale’s Fair Park is the site in odd-numbered years and Cameron’s Wilson-Ledbetter Park in even-numbered years.
From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Fourth, the Cameron park will feature fun and games, along with food trucks and music by the Communities in Concert Band.
There will be an apple pie-eating contest, open to the first 15 registrants, along with watermelon-seed spitting and Fourth-of-July themed singing contests.
Five-dollar wrist bands will be sold, enabling the wearer to play all games and attend a magic show with magician David G. Wonder.
Fireworks follow at dusk.
Sponsors for the activities are the Rockdale and Cameron Chambers of Commerce, State Farm Insurance-Julie Sulak, St. Monica’s Catholic Church, HT Fitness and Citizens National Bank.
CLOSINGS—In Rockdale, City Hall will be closed, as will the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library.
But there will be garbage pickup as usual.
Local financial institutions will be closed for the holiday.
The post office will be closed for the Fourth.
Many Rockdale and area businesses will close for the holiday.
MILANO PARADE—Milano will host its annual Fourth of July parade.
Lineup is at 9:30 a.m. at the MHS football field parking lot. Parade judging is at 9:55 and the parade follows at 10:30, heading downtown.
The morning ends with a free hot dog lunch at the civic center following the parade. Call 254-541-2816 for more information.
