QUICK LOOK

Officials are urging caution after a rabid bat was found Friday on the grounds of the Thorn-dale ISD.

Police Chief Martin Jackson said no known contact was made between the bat and any human or animal.

TISD Supt. Adam Ivy said maintenance personnel found a bat on the floor of the custodial area of the district’s ag shop about 9:30 a.m.

Ivy said the bat was taken to police. Jackson said it was submitted to the Department of State Health Services and it tested positive for rabies.

Ivy said “there are no indications” of a bat colony on campus and staffers are making regular visual inspections of the area.

Jackson said anyone who comes into contact with a bat should immediately contact their physician and call the Thorndale Police Department, through the Milam County Sheriff’s Office, at 254-697-7033 and the State Health Department at 254-778-6744.

He said families should also determine if their pets had any contact with a bat.
