Is my child ready for kindergarten?

Rockdale Elementary School kindergarten teachers want their students to be successful, excited and confident when they begin their school career.

We want them to develop a love for learning and make friendships that will possibly last their entire lives.

In kindergarten, we have high academic expectations in all areas, particularly in reading, writing and math.

You would be amazed at the things a kindergartner can accomplish if it is an expectation.

The foundation that we build for our students will create a successful path for their educational experiences in the future.

Teachers cannot be the determining factor in a child’s success.

Parents must be involved and participate in the learning process along with children.

If parents team with teachers, we can reach unbelievable goals.

The most important factor for your child to be successful is that they are ready for kindergarten.

You may be asking these questions: Is my child ready for kindergarten?

What will I need to do to prepare my child to start school?

At the beginning of the year, most teachers are not overly concerned with how many letters or numbers your child can identify.

Instead, they would rather them come to school ready to learn.

Check the following kindergarten readiness checklist to see how prepared your child is for kindergarten and areas you can work on to help them be successful:

Personal care routine

• Use the bathroom independently.

• Practice good personal hygiene and dress themselves.

• Eat lunch.

• Tie own shoes after December.

Academics

• Knowledge of books.

• Recognize their first name in print.

• Write their first name and recognize the letters in their name.

• Possess some letter awareness.

• Color and shape recognition.

• Count to 10 and recognize some numbers.

• Follow simple 2 and 3 step directions.

• Hold and use pencil/scissors correctly.

• Have the ability to sit and actively listen for 5 to 10 minutes.

• Have the ability to tell an adult their first name.

• Have the ability to ask for help when needed.

In addition to the checklist, parents should be reading to their child and asking questions about the story.

Also, parents should focus on helping their child become independent/responsible, practicing letters/numbers, and setting an early bedtime so kids get plenty of rest and get to school on time.

Pre-k and kindergarten round up is fast approaching.

Make sure that to register your child as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the school year to begin.

This will help in the process of making classrooms and teachers for the upcoming school year.
