Rockdale Federal Credit Union will say goodbye to longtime board member Fred Marshall at the end of March, who has served as a trustee with the credit union for 50 years.
To Marshall, who moved to Rockdale in 1952 when he was age six, being a part of RFCU all of these years was something he never intended to do.
“I never planned to be on the board for 50 years,” Marshall said. “I just kept running and they kept letting me stay.”
The Milam County native didn’t only take pride in serving on the RFCU board but serving his community at large. He was on the Rockdale city council for 24 years.
“I loved all the different kind of people that I got to know,” he said. “It’s the unique characters and the relationships you have with people here that made it such a meaningful experience.”
He also talked about the changes he’s seen the difference in Rockdale during its most prosperous times and the present.
“When I would drive around Rockdale after Alcoa shut down, I noticed that yards around town weren’t as well kept as they used to be,” he said. “During good times, people have money to take care of their yards.”
Marshall also has immense gratitude for the employees at RFCU and fellow trustees that he has served with over the years.
“They did it for me,” he said. “They’re the reason I was able to serve on the board for as long as I have.”
