Rockdale City Council members voted on first reading to void the May election for the open seat in the West Ward and declare Brett Boren the new city council member as he was the only candidate for that open seat.

He will join the council after the election which will be held May 1 because the open seat on the east side is contested with Scott Starnes challenging incumbent Richard Coppedge for a place on the council.

The council also appointed election judges and an early voting ballot board for the spring election.

The council selected Joyce Dalley as the judge, Dave Melton as the alternate judge, Mary Ware as a clerk and Gloria Zapata as a clerk.

The council also voted to approve two projects that were forced on them by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Texas Department of Transportation.

“We don’ have any choice, but to approve H and I (the letters of the forced projects on the night’s agenda),” King told the council. One project is to relocate water and sewer lines along FM 908 and FM 487 because TxDOT is going to do some work on those roads.

The other project is to either move or encase a major sewer truck line in the area of Bridge Park.

The council also heard from City Manager Barbara Holly about setting up budget priorities for the next fiscal year.

“We need to have a plan,” she said citing the two snow storms that blasted the Rockdale area in the past two months.

Members agreed that coming up with an emergency plan needed to be a priority.
