Candidates in the two contested May 5 Rockdale City Council races will face the public Thursday afternoon in a Meet the Candidates Forum at the Patterson Civic Center.
The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center is hosting the event which begins at 5:30 p.m.
Questions for the fi ve candidates—three in the east ward and two in the west—must be submitted in advance and the questions asked Thursday will be selected from those submitted.
The forum is only for City of Rockdale candidates. There is also a contested Rockdale ISD school board race May 5, but it will not be part of Thursday’s session.
HISTORIC—Richard Coppedge, Sharon Cloud and Tim Ramey are seeking the east ward council seat being vacated by Willie Phillips.
In the west ward, Jason Barcak and Monique Gebhart are candidates for the position now held by Colby Fisher, who did not seek re-election.
The 2018 election is historic. It’s the first time in 34 years no incumbents have sought re-election in a regularly scheduled city balloting.
QUESTIONS—Those with questions for the candidates have three ways to submit them:
• Email the Chamber at info@rockdalechamber.com.
• Phone the Chamber at 512-446-2030.
• Come by the Chamber and give them your question in person. The Chamber’s Rock House Visitor Center is located at 1203 West Cameron (US 79), by the big bright scrolling electronic sign.
It’s requested all questions be related to Milam County issues.
MAY 5—In the school board race, which won’t be addressed on Thursday—Place 7 incumbent Julia Cardona is opposed by Ryan Warner.
There are six unopposed incumbents in other Rock-dale entities having May 5 elections.
School trustees Raymon Puente (Place 1), Troy Zinn (Place 2) and Charles Miles (Place 4) did not draw any opponents.
The entire Rockdale Hospital District Board is unopposed and that election will be canceled.
Filing were incumbents Dr. Dennis Brooks (Place 1, east ward), Terry Browning (at large), Tom Loth (at large) and Brad Masek (Place 3, west ward).
