The Rockdale City Council held a workshop with MDD Director Jim Gibson at Monday night’s meeting to try to get the city council, the MDD and other entities under the same umbrella when offering tax abatements to potential new Rockdale businesses.

Gibson did a study comparing Rockdale’s standards with other cities of different sizes to see how Rockdale stacks up comparatively. His study showed that Rockdale is often not competitive to other cities.

The council decided to allow Gibson to make changes to make Rockdale more competitive and will review them at next month’s council meeting.

The council also passed a measure to save the city money by approving their bond representative, Gregory Miller with Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP, to refinance the city’s current bonds. The refinance will save the city over $100,000 when and if interest rates come down. The measure allows Miller to act on behalf of the city.

Council members approved the setting of the council election for the mayor's seat as well as one east ward and one west ward council seat.
