QUICK LOOK

The Rockdale City Council is expected to act on the 2019-20 tax rate during its regular monthly session a 5:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

Unless something changes over the weekend that tax rate is expected to be virtually identical to the current 91.18 cents.

Earlier in the summer the council had proposed raising the rate to 94.99 cents.

But after two public hearings, and the announcement by the Rockdale Hospital District that it would impose a 6.5-cent tax rate on city residents the council went into cost-cutting mode.

City Manager Chris Whittaker also referenced this year’s water rate hikes—with more to come—as Rockdale prepares the largest water system overhaul in its history.

Budget cuts of about $70,000 have been discussed including the care of parks and cemetery maintenance.

Appraisals on many Rockdale homes and businesses went up again in 2019.
