Texas counties and cities have received their final sales tax rebate checks from the state comptroller and while Rockdale and Milam County ended the year “in the red” it’s still not as bad as it might have been

Milam County, after being down substantially for much of the year, will end 2018 with only a 2.74 defi cit.

The year’s total was $965,034, down from $992,296 in 2017.

For the month Milam was up 2.68 percent, collecting $79,711, compared to $77,627 last year.

State Comptroller Glenn Hegar disbursed December sales tax checks last week. December checks represent sales taxes collected in October and reported to the state in November.

The City of Rock-dale’s December total was $58,447, down 2.16 percent from $59,741 last year.

For the year, Rockdale was down 3.15 percent, going from $786,590 to $761,744.

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) was almost identical, both for the month and the year.

The MDD total for December was $29,437. That’s down 0.84 percent from $29,687 in December, 2017.

For the year, the Rockdale MDD was up 0.32 percent, from $372,449 to $373,673.

The City of Cameron received a check for $71,436, down 4.62 percent from $74,903 reported for December, 2017.

For the year, Cameron receipts are down 0.49 percent, from $859,034 to $854,794.

Milano’s December check of $6,957 was down 5.36 percent from the December, 2017, total of $7,352.

For the year, Milano is up 2.23 percent, from $82,995 to $84,851.

Thorndale’s December check was $10,200. That’s up 17.494 percent from $8,681 in December, 2017.

For the year, Thorndale is up 4.59 percent, from 142,538 to $149,091.

Buckholts registered a 3.39-percent increase for the month. Its December, 2018, check was $1,288, up 3.39 percent from the December, 2017, figure of $1,246. For the year, Buckholts is up 12.49 percent, from $16,771 to $18,867.

Of Milam’s adjacent counties which collect sales taxes, all were up for the month and only Lee County was down for the year, falling 2.27 percent.
