At Monday night’s city council meeting city officials suggested that the Rockdale Fair Association ask for some hotel and motel tax funding (HOT funds) to both promote the fair and to use the money for entertainment costs. The city was able to give the association $51,856. The Rockdale Fair brings the most visitors to town and is the largest event using hotel rooms. It was noted by City Manager Barbara Holly that the Fair Association has not asked for any money in the past five years.

Ordinances were passed to rezone the FM 487 property from industrial to a planned development residential district with representatives from both Ranch Road Development and D.R. Horton Homes present to answer any questions. The representatives also gave the council and audience examples of what the homes will look like.

Another ordinance gives the green light to the proposed indoor shooting range in Rockdale proposed by Tony Ellis of Majik Firearms. This proposal has, at times, been controversial from the start, but after reassurances that everything would be done to the letter of the law by Ellis, the measure passed 5 to 1.

The council also met in executive session for over an hour to discuss the city manager’s position, duties, responsibilities and priorities. RISD Superintendent Denise Monzingo also gave the council a briefing on school security measures and consideration of deployment and specific occasions for implementation of security personnel or devices.
