City Manager Barbara Holly told Rockdale City Council members at Monday’s night’s council meeting in City Hall that the city is working as fast as two state agencies will let it in regards to getting water pipes laid in downtown.

“We are working as diligently and as quickly as TxDOT and the Texas Water Development Board will let us,” she said. “According to TxDOT, we are moving quickly, but to the businesses we are moving slowly. We have got to get this done and get it done right.”

The work that began late last year, has hit snags for the past few months.

But the city, TxDOT and TWDB are now holding progress meetings in an effort to get the work completed.

Moving west on the TxDOT construction, Council Lin Perry was upset to hear that TxDOT may put sidewalks down US 79 between Scarborough and Wilcox before the city can place the water line there.

“This is ridiculous,” Perry said.

Mayor John King told Perry the move just points to the inflexibility of TxDOT because they have already told the city that the state agency is in its construction phase.

Perry said he would like to be at one of the next meetings with the state agencies to discuss that inflexibility.

The council also went over the budget in a workshop session. The budget won’t be finalized and approved until next month.

A committee was appointed to evaluate contenders for the solid waste management collection service contract that be awarded later this year.

Council voted to give the Chamber of Commerce $25,500 to be paid in monthly increments from the city hotel occupancy tax fund to provide services for fiscal year 2021-22.

The Chamber will also get $10,000 from the hotel fund to operate the Rockdale Farmer’s Market from March through October of next year.
