Rockdale residents mostly understand “where the city is coming from” on trying to standardize house numbering, but they would rather try a voluntary system first.

The City of Rockdale is mulling an ordinance that would require residents to post numbers to aid emergency responders in locating addresses. A public forum was held Thursday at the city library.

The draft ordinance, which had not been acted upon by the city council, currently calls for six-inch, reflective numbers to be placed in a conspicuous place on the home itself.

It was noted at the discussion that many Rockdale residents have numbers on mailboxes or at the curb.

Consensus at the meeting was for the city to mount an education campaign first in an attempt to get voluntary compliance with a standardized numbering system and move on to an ordinance if necessary.

Also, some local residences have four-inch high numerals, even three-inch high numbers on mailbox.

Barbara Holly, city development services director, said the primary focus is safety.

“We want to be sure emergency crews can see the numbers from the street so you (Rockdale residents) can stay as safe as possible,” she said.

The matter, including possible changes to the ordinance, will go before the city council.

At a previous session some council members had expressed support for continuing to allow numbers on mailboxes and curbs.
