The good news is TxDOT contractors have resumed work along US 79.

The bad news, for now, is the work isn’t downtown, but it is coming, officials said.

“We are working as fast as we can with TxDOT to get this approved and underway,” said Rockdale City Manager Barbara Holly earlier this week.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently reviewing the city’s plan to put down new water lines in the city right of way as opposed to the state right of way which is where they are now in the downtown area.

“We submitted plans, they responded, we fixed them and sent them back today (Monday),” she said.

“All public utilities placed within TxDOT right of way must go through approval based on TAC (Texas Administrative Code) requirements. This review includes review of site conditions, traffic control, utility placement and adherence to TAC requirements. TxDOT is currently working with Rockdale city staff to get all required documentation and ensure all TAC requirements are met,” a spokesman for TxDOT added.

Also, TxDOT contractor Big Creek moved a crew back in during the last week of June to work on the west end of the US 79 project, a TxDOT spokesman said.

The agency’s plan is to add the curb, gutter and driveway work on the north side of US 79, west of the downtown area.

Once that is completed, then the same work will be done on the south side of US 79 west of the downtown area. Big Creek said the work just west of downtown area should be finished in two to three months.

When the water line work in the blocks from Green to Burleson is completed by Rockdale city workers, Big Creek will move back to downtown to complete the sidewalk and parking area work on the north side of US 79 in front of the downtown businesses.
