Body

The two closest driver’s licenses offices to Rockdale have turned up on a list of possible closures.

A closure recommendation list compiled by the Texas Department of Public Safety includes the Cameron and Taylor offices.

The list was made public last week by the Texas Association of Counties.

SUNSET—It’s part of the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission’s work. The list has been sent to the commission by the DPS and includes recommendations to close 87 branch offices throughout the state.

Neither the Sunset Commission nor the Texas Legislature has acted on the recommendation.

The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission is a 12-member legislative board tasked with identifying and eliminating waste, duplication, and inefficiency for more than 130 Texas state agencies.

It acts in an advisory capacity but since its inception in 1977 the Texas Legislature has enacted a large majority of the commission’s recommendations.

Seventy-nine agencies have been abolished

LAST OFFICE—The Cameron driver’s license office is the final one operating in Milam County.

For decades Rockdale had its own driver’s license offi ce.

Should the Cameron and Taylor offices close, the closest one to Rockdale would be Caldwell, roughly about the same distance as Taylor.

Many, but not all, Texans are able to renew licenses online at https://www.dps.texas.gov/ Driver-License/index.htm.
