MILANO—There will be contested races for mayor, city council and school board in Milano on May 4.
Names of candidates who filed during the final week, and not previously provided to this newspaper, have now been listed.
Karl Westbrook filed for the mayor’s post. He challenges incumbent Roddy Gage.
There’s also a contest for the Milano City Council. Bryan Woods joins incumbents David Gunnels Jr., Steve Honeycutt and Glenda Westbrook in a four-person chase for three at-large seats.
The Milano ISD school board race ended up as a five person race for three spots with newcomers Greg Spears and Dennis Magee, along with incumbents Carl Blake, Lynnette Taylor and Michael Andrews.
Benefit ride scheduled at Nat’s March 30th
A benefit ride/fund raiser for Dendy Brown is scheduled for March 30 leaving from Nat’s near Milano.
Brown was critically injured in an accident last September.
Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. Fee if $20 for riders, $25 with passenger. T-shirts are $20, pre-order.
Food is provided to participants.
Barbecue plates, priced at $10, will be sold to the public from 11:30 a.m. until sold out. There’s also live music by Southern Groove, live and silent auctions.

MDD okays three
business rent assists
One week after announcing it would resume rent assistance for eligible Rock-dale businesses, the Municipal Development District approved three requests during its Monday meeting as follows:
• Marvin Clement, CPA, $425 for six months.
• The Dogspaw, $300 per month for five months and $200 for an additional seven months, based on a two-year lease.
• Texas Electric Inc., $300 for 12 months.
Milam Music Fest set
Saturday at The Ranch
Several locally-based bands will perform during the Milam Music Fest, scheduled for Saturday at The Ranch.
The event begins at 6 p.m. and there’s no cover charge.
Musicians slated to perform are David & Waylon, Robert Lawhon, Treble Soul, Brooke Graham, Elixir and Bluesadillos.
Elixir will be featured Thursday on the morning news program, 9:30 to 10 a.m., on KTBC, Fox 7, in Austin and will promote the Milam Music Fest, according to Russell Fischer, owner of The Ranch.
Library stained glass
dedication is Friday
Formal dedication of the stained glass windows from the Dr. Rob Wallis house is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the city library.
That’s during the monthly First Friday mixer which runs from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Through efforts of the Milam County Historical Commission, city government, Perry & Perry Builders and volunteers, the windows were restored with original glass and are now on display at two locations in the library.
Windows are being dedicated to the memory of the late Joy Timmerman Graham and in honor of Dr. Lucile Estell, preservationists and historians, and the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail.
The public is invited.
MARC Ride Committee set March 10 meeting
The MARC Ride Committee will hold an organizational meeting for the 18th annual ride at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the MARC Center, 1705 Pecos.
This year’s ride will be June 8 as the date has been changed to the second Saturday in June instead of the second Saturday in April, as in the past.
Anyone wanting to assist is asked to attend the meeting or call 512-540-2561 or 512-299-7446.
One hurt in Milano
accident on Sunday
MILANO—The DPS reported Dalton Hawkins of Lexington was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital after a two-vehicle collision at 6:15 a.m. Sunday on US 79 in Milano.
Other driver was listed as Mireta Aguirre of Milano. Extensive vehicle damages were reported.
